Carol Atwood is founder and President of Spartacus Capital which is currently setting up a financial, educational and supply chain initiative in the ethical mining industry.

Spartacus Capital also provides advisory services to organizations requiring high level strategic partnerships, including support for fundraising for both grant and equity/debt. Past projects have covered an array of sectors including: emerging markets, natural resources and the social media sectors. One initiative involved acting as intermediary between the third largest steel company in China and the President and Ministers of Lands, Mine and Energy of Liberia.


Ms. Atwood is a successful entrepreneur who is actively involved in creating and participating in socially focused ventures, with a primary focus in emerging markets and social networking.

She is a recipient of many awards, including “NYC Entrepreneur of the Year” award, which was sponsored by NASDAQ, Kaufmann Foundation, and Ernst and Young. Ms. Atwood formerly owned and operated TMG, an international marketing company that developed programs for Fortune 500 companies such as the luxury goods sector including jewelry. In 1997, TMG was named Company of the Year by the National Association of Small Business Investment Companies and ranked among the top 100 women-owned businesses by Working Woman magazine, placing between Martha Stewart and Oprah Winfrey.

Carol is the founder of Spartacus Media Enterprises, a social mission media company which produces conferences, convening’s and advisory support for mission-driven media makers and their supporters. Spartacus Media produced and co –hosted the “Investing in Media that Matters Gathering at Sundance”. More than 240 creative artists and funders assembled in Sundance Village, Utah to strategize ways to transform the film industry in order to stimulate more positive social change and to hear talks from such media greats as Robert Redford, Pierce Brosnan and Walter Cronkite.

Ongoing advisory work on behalf of funders and media makers in the social space has resulted in providing connections for hundreds of distribution, marketing and production partnerships for social- themed media makers.

She is the Chair of the Board for Filmmaker’s Collaborative, one of the country’s leading fiscal sponsor organizations for award- winning filmmakers which just hosted an event for a provocative film at the ICA film last week which George Clooney Executive Produced.

Ms. Atwood is on the board of the Calvert Foundation and serves as the Chair of the Advancement Committee. Calvert Foundation’s goal is to maximize the flow of capital to disadvantaged communities in order to foster a more equitable and sustainable society and has provided close to one billion dollars in lending to communities since its inception.

Ms. Atwood is also on the board of directors of King Arthur Flour (KAF). KAF is the third largest flour brand in the U.S, with a large stake in wheat pricing. Serving as the Chair of the Finance Committee has given Ms. Atwood a keen understanding of grain and commodity purchasing.

Ms. Atwood is additionally a founding board member of IW Financial (IWF). IWF offers web based applications that empower advisors and money managers to quickly identify the social and environmentally sound investments that best meet their clients’ specific financial and corporate practices criteria such as board diversity, governance and environmental issues.

Ms. Atwood recently served on the steering committee of Boston College’s Institute for Responsible Investment (IRI), where she initiated the IRI’s effort to set standards for REIT’s that wanted to claim they were Green. The IRI is led by the chief investment officer of Domini Investments, Steve Lydenberg. The organizations purpose is to mainstream the concepts underlying socially responsible investment with an emphasis on environmental investment.

Ms. Atwood has been on the Impact and Messaging Committee of the Social Investment Forum, a national non-profit membership association dedicated to promoting the concept, practice and growth of socially and environmentally responsible investing. In addition, she was a board member of Social Venture Network, a national membership organization for socially and environmentally driven CEO’s of privately held companies, with members such as Ben Cohen of Ben and Jerry’s and Gary Hirschberg of Stonyfield Farms.

Ms. Atwood was also a previous board member of Social Venture Partners, Boston. SVP is a collaboration of pooled philanthropists utilizing the private equity model for their grant giving. Ms. Atwood also served as Chair of the Research Committee for Investors’ Circle. Investors’ Circle is an international member organization of private equity investors that invest in socially and environmentally driven private companies. In Ms. Atwood’s capacity as Chair she oversaw the analysis of return on investment of members in IC sponsored portfolio companies, utilizing McKinsey and Co along with the Harvard Business School as collaborators in the project.

Ms. Atwood is also a partner in the network of The CSR Group. The CSR Group is a consulting and communications firm that works with businesses and organizations to address issues of corporate social responsibility. The CSR Group has a partnership with Environs, one of the leading environmental consulting firms in the U.S.
